Minutes of the Newhaven Branch Meeting

held at the White Hart on Sunday Jan 4th 1920

Bro. F. Sherwin took the Chair

Very few members present, minutes read of the last meeting, proposed by Bro. A. Pearce and seconded Bro. P. Reed. That they be passed as correct.

Questions arising out of the minutes, Bro. F. Harris moved. That Secretary post notice up in Shed calling meetings. Carried.

Bro. H. Bowden proposed and Bro. A. Pearce seconded. 

That the meeting nights be last Sunday in the month instead of the first. Carried

Minutes of No. 5 District Council read and discussed.


Letter read from Head Office asking for resolution on

1, Nationalisation of Mines

2, Withdrawal of troops from Russia

3, Abolish Conscription.

After a little discussion it was moved by Bro. P. Reed & seconded by A. Pearce. That we stand by our E.C. in their action they should take, all members present voted in favour 7.

Minutes of last meeting was read and discussed and it was proposed by Bro. L. Lower and seconded by Bro. J. Lower. That thy be accepted arising out of the minutes of the last meeting  to nationalisation of mines, the resolution of the last meeting was supported.


Letter from Maidstone branch re representation on District Council, one from each branch. Moved by Bro. C. Barrow and seconded by Bro. P. Reed. That we support Maidstone resolution. Carried. 


Letter read from Ash Branch asking for support to their letter to form a union to embrace the body of Loco workers mainly, Shedmen, coalmen, Washers out set to become affiliated to the A.S.L.E. & F. Moved by M.Smith that we support same. Carried.


Discussion arose over enginemen's lockers, when it was moved by C. Barrow & seconded by H. Bowden. That the Secretary take up with the Foreman over same. Carried.

Minutes of the Newhaven Branch Meeting

held at the White Hart on Sunday March 7th 1920

Bro. F. Sherwin was in the Chair

 

Minutes of last meeting was read and adopted, arising out of the minutes the question was asked about the resolution when the correspondence re nationalisation of mines was read. 

Secretary stated he had seen the Foreman about the men’s lockers, who had promised to obtain the same.

Bro. D. Boyle gave a very good report on his attending the Labour Party’s meeting, delegates was elected to represent us on the Labour Party, Bros. D. Boyle and L. Lower being the two elected.

A strong discussion took place on the circular posted in the shed on the question of walking time and the disposal of engines and it was proposed by D. Boyle & seconded by L. Lower. That the circular be accepted. Bro. F. Harris proposed as an amendment & Bro. T. Denman seconded. That the circular be not accepted. The amendment was carried. The question then arose in what way this matter was to be dealt with when it was proposed by F. Harris & seconded by C. Barrow. That the Secretary take up with the next delegation. Carried.

Bro. D. Boyle then spoke on the slackness of members not taking a more prominant part in the work of the Society and called for attention to the time was lost in discussions as said he wished to propose the following resolution.

That a definate period of time should be alloted for each meeting to be sub divided into say 10 minutes periods, and the member of each period after the reading of the correspondence, are available to equal the number of questions to be dealt with at that particular meeting, any questions absorbing more than that time, ie 10 minutes to be refered to an extra meeting, all questions to be given notice of to the Chairman at the commencent of the meeting may be held after the closing of the ordinary meeting on the same day.

There being no seconder to the resolution it was not carried.

held at the White Hart on Sunday March 28th 1920

Minutes of the last meeting read, when it was proposed by Bro. C. Barrow and seconded by Bro. L. Lower. That they be accepted.


Bro. H. Christmas and Bro. J. Collins applied for suspension pay for irregular working of the electric staff. Moved by Bro. P. Reed & seconded by Bro. L. Lower. That the claim be paid.


Letter read from the Labour Party asking for support with the view of celebrating May Day. Moved by Bro. A. Pearce & seconded by W. Goldsmith. That we support same. Carried.


Letter read from the Docker Union protesting against the action of some of our members unloading coal and hope it will not accrue again. Noted.


Bro. C. Barrow asked Bro. Goldsmith wheater he had attended the Trades & Labour Council and if he wanted the Branch to take up the matter of his failing in his eyesight. Bro. Goldsmith replied that he had not attended and he would let the matter of his eyesight stand over.

Minutes read of last meeting and discussed, moved by Bro. P. Reed and seconded by Bro. W. Smith. That minutes be accepted.


Letter from Labour Party and noted, letter from Head Office re settlement of Central Wages Board.


Bro. A. Pearce complained of being kept firing and sending to Brighton for drivers after some discussion it was decided for the Secretary to take up with the Foreman.


Bro. W. Smith complained of being firing at times when ought to be employed as a Shed Driver after some discussion it was decided for the Secretary to take up with the Foreman.

Letter was read from Tunbridge Wells re eyesight test and was much appreciated.


Letter from Bro. Langridge, Eastbourne, offering to stand as delegate for District council. moved Bro. P. Reed and seconded Bro. L. Lower. That Bo. Langridge stand as delegate.


Bro Hubbard complained of doing coal-man's work and receiving cleaners pay for same after a discussion and the rule of the agreement was read it was moved by Bro A. Pearce & seconded by Bro. J. Green. That the Secretary be instructed to write to Mr. Billinton asking for pay for the time the man had been doing the higher grade work failing a satisfactory reply to put the matter in the hands of Head Office.


A long discussion took place in regards the Harbour works engine be transferred to the Loco Dept and it was thought that we could not do anything on the matter all the time men was confined to their own job but watch events.

Minutes read of last meeting and discussed, moved by Bro. D. Boyle and seconded by Bro. A. Pearce. That minutes be accepted.


Correspondence read and noted reply from Mr. Billinton received it stating that Bro. G. Hubbard claim would be paid.


A discussion took place on the question of a rate driver doing shed duties also sending to Brighton for drivers when we had drivers when it was moved by Bro. A. Pearce & seconded by Bro. D. Boyle. That the Secretary write to Mr. Billinton calling his attention to same after a heated discussion it was proposed that we approach the Foreman first and if it was not stopped to lay the case direct to Brighton.

Minutes read of last meeting, moved Bro. D. Boyle and seconded by Bro. P. Reed. That minutes be accepted. Questions arising out of the minutes was asked, Secretary replied.


Correspondence was read and noted.


Bro. C. Lower raised the question of spare firemen being paid three hours for washing out also Cleaners washing out for Cleaners pay, after a discussion it was decided that the Secretary write to Head Office for information.


Bro G. Hubbard informed the Branch that he had received the back money for doing coal man wok for which he thanked them.

held at the White Hart on Sunday Oct 3rd 1920

Minutes of last meeting was rearm moved by Bro. P. Reed and seconded by Bro. J. Green. That minutes be accepted.


Discussion arising out of the minutes re cleaners washing out and reply from Head Office was read after some discussion it was moved by P. Reed & seconded by J. Green. 


That Secretary take up with Brighton on the matter. Secretary replied and moved as an amendment that each member make out an application for his back pay by doing so he thought it would be the means of getting higher grade thats the same as the traffic. Carried.


Bro. G. Hubbard brought up the question of getting his money and said he thought there ought to be some arrangements made to get the same. After some discussion it was decided to let it stand over till next meeting, but Bro. Hubbard was advised to apply at the Marine Shops on Friday for his money.

held at the White Hart on Sunday Oct 31st 1920

Minutes of last meeting was read, moved by Bro. P. Reed and seconded by Bro. G. Hubbard. That minutes be accepted.


Correspondence was read re the Miner's strike, Secretary sated that seeing that there was not enough time to have a meeting on the Sunday, as the notice did not arrive till late Saturday, he and the Chairman attended an open meeting of the N.U.R. and drafted a resolution from that meeting. Moved by P. Reed & seconded by Bro. H. bowden. That the Secretary action be endorsed. Carried.


Bro. Hubbard stated that it was not possible to get his money at the shops. Moved by Bro. F. Harris & seconded by Bro. P. Reed. That Secretary see the Foreman with a view of letting one one go and get their money. Carried


Moved by Bro. F. Harris & seconded by Bro. P. Reed. That he thought that we ought to apply for a sheet for tender first working, after a discussion it was decided to let it stand over till next meeting when normal working may be started.

Minutes of the last meeting was read, moved by Bro. F. Harris and seconded by Bro. P. Reed. That minutes be accepted.


Correspondence was read and noted.


Moved by Bro. F. Harris and seconded by Bro. P. Reed. That the question left over from the last meeting should again be discussed. After a discussion it was moved by Bro. F. Harris & seconded by Bro. P. Reed. That the Secretary write to Mr. Billinton through the Loco Foreman, with the view of supplying a sheet for tender first running. Carried.


Election of Officers held over till next meeting as there was not sufficient members interested in the cause to attend.

Correspondence was read and noted.


Moved by Bro. F. Harris. That letter be sent to Bro. M. Smith who is in Hospital, explaining the ruling of the Branch. Carried. Moved that Bro. A Pearce be asked to write the letter.
