LOCOMOTIVE JOURNAL
MAY 1968
BRIGHTON (1)
Bro. W. Terrill was involved in an accident when a crane lifting a container toppled over and
our member sustained severe head injuries. Notwithstanding very difficult circumstance in
this case A.G.S. Ray Buckton, against strong opposition, succeeded in obtaining a most
favourable settlement. Bro. Buckton again won a case for Bro. J. Gray who unfortunately lost a leg in a motor-cycle accident. Here again the circumstances were adverse but in negotiating with the insurance company Bro. Buckton successfully concluded a very substantial settlement on behalf of our member. Mr. Buckton must have put in a lot of
time and effort on these two cases and we wish to publicise the good work that he has done.
Thank you. Brother!
Bro. Don Pullen has shown his skill and resourcefulness in a very tricky discipline case
involving a Brighton Driver, arising from a complete brake failure on a Crompton loco. No
accident occurred, fortunately. The Driver was found guilty of negligence and not having his
train under control. Bro. Pullen in the period intervening before the appeal made stringent
investigations collected enough evidence in our member’s favour to have the charge dropped and our member cleared.
It is of the utmost importance to report all defects; only when they have been reported can
they be used in supporting evidence. Thank you, Bro. Don!

Progressive Productivity Committee
At meeting held 6th May 1968, it was suggested that a committee be formed to boost mileage on Central Division, as on the S.W. division.
Bro. Bastion of Crystal Palace disagreed strongly and Brighton representative, claimed that this was managements prerogative.
The management withdrew for representative discussion in which Bro. W. Eames, London Bridge, recommended that the committee be thrown out and that the representation try for a pay and productivity scheme be sought for Southern Region only.
A Committee was set up to try to improve mileage.

*The rail strike lasted 12 days in total and caused massive disruption to the railway network.
On Friday 5th July, 1968 a work to rule was called off after the N.U.R. accepted a peace offer from British Railways.
The deal provided pay increases for all the union's members - 10 shillings a week extra for the lowest paid and three per cent extra for all others.

DISTRICT ORGANISER REPORT
We had a good meeting recently at Three Bridges where Jimmy Sayers and his lads wanted to know the details of the pending closure of their depot. At Feltham, Eastbourne and other Southern Depots, too, our members anxiousy await the November vacancy lists which will give some idea of the moves in store.
Our Sectional council Representatives have had a few crosses to bear down through the years, but never on the Southern Region have they been confronted with wholesale redundancy before.
